I recently added a Mac to my office network and also joined the transMUG (“A Mac User Group by and for translators”). I learned there that the favored open source office suite for Mac users is NeoOffice, as opposed to Open Office. After paying all these to the MS Office gods, I was not going to pay again for the Mac machine! Visit http://www.neooffice.org/ and check it out!

Jill, that’s exactly right and I forgot to mention it. I think that until version 2007 Word also did not count headers and footers, right? At any rate, I would also like to be able to count large numbers of files at once (and not have to e-mail you to bug you to do it for me every time!), so that’s another reason to try a word count tool. Thanks for the tip.

You should not necessarily trust Word’s word count. I would recommend using a third party word count tool such as PractiCount or AnyCount. If your text contains text boxes the Word word count will be skewed because Word doesn’t count certain things like embedded files, embedded objects, text boxes, etc.
